Soil Morphology 2025

While you may register for one or both days of the class, if you are a Professional Engineer who will be taking the certification exam at the end of the class, you must register for both days.

To properly design stormwater infiltration BMPs-- rain gardens, infiltration trenches, porous paving, etc.--one must know the depth to the water table, which can be estimated by interpreting soil morphology: the observable traits of the soil.

Day one of the class features lectures on the geology of Northern Virginia,the relationships between soil morphology and topography, and how to read the visual indicators of soils. Day two allows participants to hone their new knowledge at field sites throughout Reston.

Geotechnical PEs who attend both days and pass the concluding exam are certified to determine water table depths using soil morphology year-round

when designing BMPs in Fairfax, Loudoun and Arlington Counties. A relevant class for anyone interested in soils stormwater management, or BMP esign.
